કીર્તન મુક્તાવલી
(૧) જનુની જીવો રે ગોપીચંદની
બાજંદ રાજાની વાત આ પદમાં આવે છે તેનું આખ્યાન યોગીજી મહારાજ તેમની આગવી શૈલીમાં નીચે પ્રમાણે કરતા.
શેખ બાજંદ
બલક બુખારાના શેખ બાજંદ ચક્રવર્તી બાદશાહ હતા. ૯૯૯ ઊંટ ઉપર તો તેમનું બબરચીખાનું-રસોડું હાલે. એક વખત બાજંદ રાજા પલટન લઈ જતા હતા. પોતે ઘોડા ઉપર બેઠેલા. આગળ-પાછળ તેમનો મોટો રસાલો ચાલે. ૯૯૯ ઊંટનું બબરચીખાનું પણ આગળ હાલે. આગળ જતાં રસ્તો સાંકડો આવ્યો. રસ્તામાં એક ઊંટ આજારી (માંદું) હતું તે મરી ગયું. રસ્તો સાંકડો હોવાથી બધું લશ્કર અટકી ગયું. બાદશાહે પુછાવ્યું, “રસ્તા બંધ કેમ?”
સિપાઈએ કહ્યું, “બાદશાહ સાહબ, રસ્તા વચ્ચે ઊંટ મર ગયા હૈ.”
બાદશાહે વૈભવ-વિલાસમાં જ દિવસો કાઢેલા. તેથી મરવાનું શું વસ્તુ છે તે જાણે નહીં. તેથી તેણે પૂછ્યું, “ક્યા મર ગયા?”
એમ કહી દીવાનને લઈ જાતે જોવા ગયા. ઊંટના મડદાને જોઈ કહે, “ઈસમેં ક્યા મર ગયા હૈ? પૂંછ હૈ, પાવ હૈ, સબ હૈ, મર ક્યાં ગયા?”
દીવાનજીએ કહ્યું, “બાદશાહ સાહબ, ઈસમેં સે રુહ (આત્મા) નિકલ ગયા.”
બાદશાહને દેહમાં આત્મા જેવી કોઈ વસ્તુ છે તેની ખબર જ નહોતી. તેણે આશ્ચર્ય સાથે પૂછ્યું, “હમ ભી ઐસા?” દીવાનજીએ કહ્યું, “હાં, તુમ બી ઐસા.”
બાજંદ રાજાને જ્ઞાન થયું કે: “આ ઊંટની જેમ એક દિવસ આ દેહને મૂકીને ચાલ્યા જવાનું છે.” આ વાતની એને એકદમ ચોટ લાગી ગઈ. શેખ બાજંદ બધો રસાલો પડતો મૂકી ત્યાં જ ફકીરી લઈ નીકળી પડ્યા. તેમને સંસાર ઉપર વૈરાગ્ય ઊપજ્યો. નિષ્કુળાનંદ સ્વામીએ લખ્યું કે:
ઊઠી ન શકે ઊંટિયો, બહુ બોલાવ્યો બાજંદજી,
તેને દેખી ત્રાસ ઊપજ્યો, લીધી ફકીરી છોડ્યો ફંદજી,
જનની જીવો રે ગોપીચંદની.
રાજપાટ, વૈભવ અને ૯૯૯ ઊંટનું રસોડું વગેરે બધું જ છોડી શેખ બાજંદ આત્માના જ્ઞાન માટે નીકળી પડ્યો. તેણે કુંભારને ત્યાંથી એક માટીનું પાટિયું (હાંડલું) લીધું. શેર લોટ માય તેટલું હતું. તેમાં ચોખા રાંધે. દિશાએ જવાનું પાણી પણ તેમાં જ લે. સ્નાન પણ તેનાથી જ. પાણી પણ તેમાં જ પીવાનું. રાત્રે ઝાડ નીચે સૂવે તે હાંડલીનું જ ઓશીકું કરે. ચક્રવર્તી બાદશાહ હતા છતાં સારા વિષયમાં આવો વૈરાગ્ય થઈ ગયો.
એક દિવસ હાંડલીમાનું અનાજ જમીને તેનું ઓશીકું કરીને શેખ બાજંદ સૂતા હતા. ઊંઘમાં હાંડલી ઉપરથી માથું હેઠું પડી ગયું. એક કૂતરો ત્યાં ફરતો હતો. તેને હાંડલીમાં અનાજની સુગંધ આવી. કૂતરાએ સૂંઘવા હાંડલીની અંદર માથું નાંખ્યું. હાંડલીમાં તેનું માથું ફીટ બેસી ગયું. કૂતરો કાઢવા ગયો પણ નીસરે નહીં. આ અવાજમાં શેખ બાજંદ જાગી ગયા. કૂતરો ભાગ્યો.
કૂતરાને ભાગતો જોઈ બાજંદ રાજાને જ્ઞાન થયું કે: “અહોહો! મારું ૯૯૯ ઊંટનું બબરચીખાનું એક કૂતરો ઉપાડી ગયો!” બાજંદ રાજાને જરાય દુઃખ ન થયું. તેમને થયું: “જમવા હાંડલી પણ શું કામ રાખવી? હવે તો કર પત્તર ને ઉદર ઝોળી!”
સંત તો વૈરાગ્યવાળા ગણાય. જો તે ફંદમાં પડે, તો તેનો વૈરાગ્ય ગયો. વૈરાગ્યવાળાને ખાન-પાન વગેરે પદાર્થોમાંથી આસક્તિ નીકળી જાય છે.

(1) Janunī jīvo re Gopīchandnī
The story of King Bājand, who is mentioned in this kirtan, has been narrated by Yogiji Maharaj in his unique style. The story in his Bodh Kathāo is as below:
King Bājand
King Bājand was a great king. His kitchen required 999 camels when he traveled. Once, he was traveling by horse with his entourage following. All of his necessities were carried by camel ahead of him and behind him. His kitchen on 999 camels was also traveling ahead of him. The entourage approached a narrow road. One sick camel died in the narrow, halting the party from moving forward. The king asked, “Why is the road blocked?”
His soldier said, “O King! A camel has died in the middle of the road.”
The king had passed his days enjoying comforts. He had no idea what death was. King Bājand asked, “What died?”
He took his minister to see the camel and asked, “What in this camel died? There’s a tail, feet, everything is there. What died?”
The minister said, “O King! The ātmā left the body.”
The king did not know that the ātmā resides in the body. He asked with surprise, “Am I like that, too?”
The minister replied, “Yes, you are like that also.”
Wisdom sparked in the king’s mind: “I also have to leave this body one day like this camel.” This thought became lodged in his heart. He left all of his belongings there and left. He became totally detached from the world. Nishkulanand Swami wrote:
Ūṭhī na shake re ūntiyo, bahu bolāvyo Bājand jī;
Tene re dekhīne trās upanyo, līdhī fakīrī chhoḍyo fand jī...
(The camel would not get up, despite Bājand calling the camel many times. He felt oppressed and renounced the futile troubles of this world.)
King Bājand left everything to gain the knowledge of this ātmā. He went to a potter and took a pot, which could fit some flour. He cooked rice in that pot. He also filled the same pot with water which he used for cleansing after discharging his bowels. He bathed with the same pot. When he slept at night under a tree, he used the pot as a pillow. He was a great king, yet he developed such detachment from the most enticing pleasures.
One night, he was sleeping after eating. His head fell to the floor in his sleep. One dog was wandering around there and picked up the scent of food in the pot. The dog put its head into the pot to smell the food and got its head stuck. The dog tried to take his head out but could not do so. Hearing the noise, Bājand awakened and the dog ran away.
King Bājand thought, “O! O! O! The dog is carrying away my kitchen that 999 camels used to carry!” He was not troubled losing the pot at all. Instead, he thought, “Why should I keep a pot for food? Now, my hands are the pot and my stomach is the jholi.”
The Sant possesses detachment. If he gets involved in enjoying pleasures and gathering materialistic objects, then his detachment is reduced to nothing. For those who are detached, their weakness for eating, drinking, etc. is gone.
